The University of Bologna together with the University of Graz, The New Bulgarian University of Sofia and the University of Primorska are launching a new International PhD Programme in “Diversity Management and Governance” leading to a Joint Degree.
The Programme in a nutshell

The three-year English-taught Programme offers specialized interdisciplinary and comparative academic training in the study of various forms of diversity, be it ethnic, cultural, linguistic, regional, religious, social or sexual orientation, and its management. Conflict prevention and management theories, reconstruction and reconciliation of divided societies after violent conflicts and political tensions, integration policies and the establishment of good governance throughout Europe are in focus in this Joint PhD Programme.
To ensure the students’ highest mobility the Programme requires that PhD Candidates spend at least two semesters in one of the partner universities.
Scholarships & Grants

The Programme offers at least two study grants of about 13.600,00 € per year to students applying at the University of Bologna. Moreover, the University of Bologna guarantees enrollment to two students selected among applicants holding a scholarship from their home government, the Italian one or other Institutions. More grants will be made available for students from the South-East of Europe within the framework of the community Programme entitled Erasmus Mundus External Windows, coordinated by the University of Graz, whose deadline is 29th October 2009. How to Apply

Interested students could apply for enrollment in the university of their choice among the four partner universities; if the application is successful the doctoral student must enroll in the university chosen for the application.
Beside the completed application form (to be expected by mid-October), interested students must submit the following documents:

1. Research project structured with background, research presentation, methodology, expected results
2. CV in English
3. Diploma/Degree Certificate (plus English translation)
4. Proof of knowledge of English (TOEFL or equivalent, diploma from a UK or US university etc.)
5. Two letters of recommendation
6. Transcript of university records (plus English translation)

Admission Requirements

Italian University degree (old regulation, at least 4 yrs courses) or a specialist degree/master (new regulation 3+2 yrs courses) or with a foreign certifiably equivalent academic qualification.
In case the academic qualification has not been certified equivalent yet, candidates must request a certification of suitability from the Doctorate Academic Board by attaching the appropriate documents
(qualification type, name and duration, study programme specifying each single educational activity including a list of courses taken and their grades). These documents, translated and legalised, must be sent together with the application form.

Candidates must draft their admission separately for each competition in either Italian or English according to the facsimile accompanying this notice. It is also possible to participate for those regularly attending the last year of a degree course (Italian University degree old regulation or specialist degree/master or foreign certifiably equivalent academic qualification) and that are certain to obtain the diploma within the 31st December 2009. In the latter case admission will be conditioned by the production of the degree diploma before the 10th January 2010, otherwise candidates will lose the right to attend the course.

In any case, the selection Committees will take into account only the qualifications sent by candidates within the deadline of this call for admission.

USA: Fellowships in Sustainability Science Harvard University's Center for International Development

The Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University's Center for International Development invites applications for resident fellowships in sustainability science for the University's academic year beginning in September 2010. The fellowship competition is open to advanced doctoral and post-doctoral students, and to mid-career professionals engaged in research or practice to facilitate the design,
implementation, and evaluation of effective interventions that promote sustainable development.

Due date for applications: *December 1, 2009*

Applicants should describe how their work would contribute to "sustainability science," the emerging field of use-inspired research seeking understanding of the interactions between human and environmental systems as well as the application of such knowledge to sustainability challenges relating to advancing development of agriculture, habitation, energy and materials, health and water while conserving the earth's life support systems. This year we will give some preference to applicants who address the challenges related to meeting human needs for water or food/agriculture/ land use in the context of sustainable development.

In addition to general funds available to support this fellowship offering, special funding for the Giorgio Ruffolo Fellowships in Sustainability Science is available to support citizens of Italy or developing countries who are therefore especially encouraged to apply. Membrane-based olefin/paraffin separation: A route to energy efficie

The Faculty of Science and Technology (700 faculty members, 1100 students) of the University of Twente offers a range of bachelor and master courses (NanoTechnology, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering and Technical Medicine). The research of the faculty is organized in three interdisciplinary research institutes: MESA+, BMTI, and IMPACT. These institutes increase the vitality of research by enabling collaboration between programs and disciplines, by providing shared facilities, and by attracting funding for joint projects. They also provide a conduit to industrial partners.

Within the Membrane Technology Group of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Twente, we have a PhD positions for a project entitled:

“Membrane-based olefin/paraffin separation: A route to energy efficient separation technology”
Membrane technology is an attractive, energy efficient alternative for molecular separations because of its high energy efficiency, reliability, and small foot print. The separation of olefins and paraffins, traditionally performed in large distillation columns, is one of the currently most energy intensive separation processes in the petrochemical industry and the energy savings obtainable with membrane technology are significant. In the present project we develop membranes for the energy efficient separation of especially lower olefins and paraffins.

The focus of this project is on the development of new carbon membranes for gas separation and on the determination of the structure properties relationship. The project integrates and combines the practical experience and the more, but far from complete fundamental understanding on polymeric olefin/paraffin separation membranes with the more explorative knowledge on carbon membranes. The combination of these aspects offers new ways towards the development of highly selective and permeable membranes for the separation of olefins and paraffins at higher feed pressures and temperatures.

The project is a collaboration between 7 partners ranging from research institutes (University of Twente, ECN, University of Düsseldorf) to industrial membrane developers (Hyflux CEPAration BV, SolSep BV) and the chemical industry (Shell Global Solutions and Dow Benelux BV).

Profile

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers with an MSc degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or a related topic, with adequate experimental and theoretical skills.

We prefer candidates with a good team spirit, who like to work in an internationally oriented environment. Fluency in English is a requirement. An interview and a scientific presentation will be part of the selection procedure.

Offer

We offer a scientific education on a multidisciplinary subject. The assignment is for 4 years, with a go/no-go assessment at the end of the first year. The candidates are expected to finish the project with a PhD thesis and disseminate the results through patents (if applicable), publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Your starting salary will be € 2042, - in the first year and up to € 2612, - gross per month in the last year.
